The Blackbaud Institute’s 2020 charitable giving report finds that online donations have increased by 21% amid the global pandemic

Tracking $ 40 billion in United States-based charitable donations from the Blackbaud Institute Index, the report is one of the most trusted resources on fundraising performance in the social welfare community.

The 2020 Charitable Giving Report explores donation trends in one of the most transformational years that the social welfare sector has ever seen. The report leverages the largest set of donor and donor trend data to help social organizations understand the past and prepare for the future with resources to create informed strategies. The findings are based on data from 8,833 nonprofit organizations, totaling $ 40.7 billion in fundraising revenue, in addition to online data from 4,964 non-profit organizations, totaling $ 3.2 billion in online fundraising revenue.

Key donation trends in the 2020 charity donation report:

  • Charitable donations in the USA grew by 2% year on year, representing an increase of more than 5% in the last three years.
  • Online donations have grown by almost 21%, representing an increase of more than 32% in the last three years.
  • A record 13% of fundraising came from online donations in 2020, reflecting similar trends in online retail sales.
  • Almost 30% of all gifts online were made from a mobile device.
  • The growth of online and mobile donations represented a dramatic shift to digital in 2020.
  • Donation amounts have increased, with a general average of donations $ 737 (one $ 120 year-over-year increase) and online donations on average $ 177 (one $ 29 increase year by year).
  • While nonprofit organizations of all sizes experienced a significant drop in donations to charity in April, May and June, donations made a notable recovery in the second half of 2020.
