‘The biggest blow in gaming history’

Star Citizen has $ 339 million in funding and 10 years of development – but there is no release date in sight.

When chief developer Chris Roberts first announced Star Citizen in 2010 with a Kickstarter campaign, the players were full of enthusiasm. Tens of thousands of people eagerly supported the project, nine of which promised $ 10,000, while another 19 pledged $ 5,000.

Star Citizen is now possibly the most expensive video game of all time. Most of its $ 339 million budget was funded directly by donors and players. The lucrative funding led Cloud Imperium Games to announce Squadron 42 in 2015, a companion for a Star Citizen player, starring Hollywood stars like Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson and Mark Strong.

But Squadron 42’s beta has been postponed yet again. After 10 years of stalling in alpha development, irreverent and angry players are exploring Star Citizen once again.

“What an incredible blow this game is,” said a Reddit user. “Hundreds of millions of dollars donated with nothing to show.”

“The biggest blow in gaming history,” said another. “They are perpetually ‘developing’ in order to maintain cash flow because they know they will never do it again [sic] money free up. “

Some Reddit users who said they support Star Citizen expressed deep remorse. One claimed to be one of the first participants in the game.

“I donated in f ****** 2013,” said another user. “It was one of the first 11K. Never again … I wasted almost $ 400 on this shit show. F *** them. TO STAY AWAY.”

Another Redditor said that they entered a completely new stage of life during the decade-long development cycle.

“I bought a $ 200 ship in 2015, when games were the center of my life,” they said. “Since then, I graduated from university, made significant progress in my career, bought a beautiful house in an established neighborhood and had three more children.”

Star Citizen was to be the crown jewel in the space simulator franchise. Unfortunately, what the game’s sponsors really achieved was increased resources, overdue deadlines and more ships to buy, but no hard release dates.

Starships have become an important source of income for the game. Players spent millions of dollars to buy them. In fact, Cloud Imperium Games once offered the Legatus Package that brings together 100 starships for $ 27,000.

$ 27,000 to buy ships in a game that is not yet in beta. Just for comparison, you can buy a new Toyota Corolla 2021 for less – at a market price.

Buyer, beware, indeed.
