The New York Times left-wing editorial board supported President Biden’s campaign and celebrated his victory, but moderate criticism of his wave of executive actions drew a rebuke from Biden’s director of communications on Thursday morning.
With Chummily’s headline, “Facilitate executive actions, Joe,” the editorial board cautioned him against relying too much on executive orders. Biden has signed dozens since taking office last week, addressing issues such as climate change, coronavirus, abortions abroad and cancellation of the Keystone pipeline.
“But that’s not how you make law,” wrote the council. “A polarized and narrowly divided Congress may offer Biden little choice but to employ executive actions or see its entire agenda hostage. These guidelines, however, are a defective substitute for legislation. They are intended to provide guidance to the government. and the needs to work within the discretion granted to the executive under existing law or the Constitution … [T]They are not intended to serve as an end around the will of Congress. By definition, such actions are more limited in what they can achieve than legislation, and presidents who extrapolate invite the courts to intervene. “

In fact, executive orders can be erased with a stroke of the pen of the next president, as former President Barack Obama saw with his successor Donald Trump, and now Trump with Biden.
“Undoing some of Trump’s excesses is necessary, but Biden’s legacy will depend on his ability to strike deals with Congress,” the board wrote.
While the newspaper was sympathetically criticizing, communications director Kate Bedingfield shouted on Twitter.

“As the NYT board criticizes President Biden, this [morning] for taking swift executive action to reverse Trump Admin’s most blatant actions, I can’t help but remember that during the primaries they encouraged voters to consider what a president could accomplish through executive action, “she tweeted.” So, my question is. what actions did the president take to reverse Donald Trump’s executive orders would they like to see him not follow? “
Bedingfield added that “it is clear” that the Biden government is following its agenda through legislation. Democrats have full control of Washington for the first time in a decade, with small majorities in the House and Senate.

Although it supported Biden in the general election, the Times’ editorial board did not endorse Biden for the Democratic nomination. Instead, he chose Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., And Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Who would win the combined zero primaries.
