Running a country requires many things, one of which is many vehicles. Currently, the vast majority of these vehicles – if not all of them – run on some kind of fossil fuel, but according to an announcement made by President Biden on Monday, that will change.

The current federal vehicle fleet is estimated at around 645,000 vehicles, and President Biden plans to replace all of them with American-made electric vehicles. The American part of this is essential because the ad was part of Biden’s “Made In America” executive order, which is expected to redirect a considerable portion of government spending to American companies and products made in the United States.

The announcement comes after much talk during Biden’s presidential campaign about pushing Americans more towards electric vehicles and cleaner energy in general. Unfortunately, the government did not include a timetable with its proclamation, so no one knows when the change will actually begin to happen.

Among the vehicles in the federal fleet that need to be replaced is the current US Postal Service delivery vehicle fleet – many of which are still Grumman LLV which became the postal vehicle of choice in the 1980s. Several companies bid on the contract to build the LLV replacement, but so far, none was chosen.
