We are about to enter February, which means that another vicious cycle of titles will soon come out of streaming services. Here’s a look at the best movies that came out of HBO Max in February 2021 – and some of them disappear in less than a month, so if you want to watch them while they’re still available, you better start watching them!
We
Jordan Peele’s mysterious exploration of identity is a far more abstract film than Skirt, but that left him open to many interpretations (in which we are delighted to engage). It is an incredible film for the second year, full of striking images and loaded with symbolism. It is clearly a film with a lot in mind, and more films could learn a lesson from the ambition on display here.
The Conjuring
James Wan’s deceptively simple 2013 horror film released an entire universe of films, but this one may still be the best in the group. It’s tense in all the right places (that applause scene is hot) and terrifying in others (the floating ending makes my skin crawl), but the performances by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are a big part of what makes this job better than his contemporaries.
Tango and money
A noisy, stupid and very fun way to spend a few hours, Tango and money it was released in 1989 and looks like the death sentence of a certain type of blockbuster in excess of the 1980s. Jack Palance is destroying the scene and feasting on it without caring about anyone or anything like the main villain.
Doctor Sleep (director’s version)
I think the weather will be kind to Mike Flanagan’s bold attempt to follow Stanley Kubrick’s The brightness. And to be honest, this entry is a reminder to myself that I need to look for that version before it disappears from HBO Max. I saw the theatrical cut when it was released and I found a lot to like, but I heard that the director’s cut is even better and corrects some of the problems of theatrical cutting.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
A full-time Gene Wilder performance is at the heart of this all-time classic, and with the recent news that the previous film is moving forward, now is as good a time as any to revisit Roald Dahl’s crazy world.
