GREENVILLE, South Carolina (WLOS) – A new member of the Greenville Zoo that has won the hearts of many now has an official name: Providence!

The Greenville Zoo made the announcement online, saying that the name of the youngest female giraffe was chosen by the Moore family, who made the winning bid during the zoo’s online auction. The auction gave people a chance to earn the right to name the baby giraffe by donating money.

The zoo said the winner will receive naming rights, a backstage tour and a conversation by a private keeper for a small group of up to five people to meet the giraffe.

Providence was born on February 21 at the zoo, weighing 148.5 pounds and standing almost two meters tall.

Her mother is a 14-year-old giraffe named Autumn. The zoo announced that Autumn was expecting another baby in November 2020. Providence is the third baby of Autumn and Miles, the zoo’s male Masai giraffe.
