Apple put a small sensor in the HomePod Mini that can measure temperature and humidity in a room, according to a report by Bloomberg on Monday. The component, which does not appear to have been previously released, may help to strengthen Apple’s smart home ambitions.

THE HomePod Mini was released in November, costing $ 99 compared to the original $ 300 HomePod. The smart speaker with Siri came with new features, including a intercom and stereo pairing. Earlier this month, Apple said it was discontinuing the original HomePod and focusing their efforts on the Mini.

Apple has internally discussed the possibility of the sensor sending temperature and humidity readings to thermostats connected to the Internet, so adjustments can be made based on current conditions, according to Bloomberg. It could also allow the HomePod Mini to trigger actions, such as turning on a fan, based on the temperature in a room.

The temperature sensor is manufactured by Texas Instruments, according to Bloomberg, and is located on the bottom of the HomePod Mini next to the power cord.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
