A quick line on Shigeru Miyamoto’s recent Super Nintendo World Direct revealed that the park’s Power-Up Bands would function as an amiibo. Instead of unique souvenirs, anyone visiting the Universal Studios Japan area will have a functioning Super Mario ‘figure’ that will stand out from the rest in their collection.
As shared on the amiibo page dedicated to the Power-Up Band, the six bands function as their respective Mario characters. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi and Toad will now technically be the first new amiibo of 2021, when the opening of Super Nintendo World will take place in February.
Interestingly, it was noted that they do not work with Wii U or 3DS systems like amiibo. This may be due to internal differences in the power-up bands compared to amiibo, or just a matter of the older systems not being updated anymore.
Power-Up Bands will be available when the Super Nintendo World opens on February 4, 2021. While international travel and theme park visits may not be possible, these “amiibo” will also come to the two American versions of the park when they finally go opened at Universal Studios Hollywood and Florida.
(Editor’s note: Universal previously stated that the new park that would be home to the Super Nintendo World in Florida is linked indefinite wait. However, Shigeru Miyamoto mentioned that the Super Nintendo World would open at Universal Studios Florida during its healthy Super Nintendo World Direct Tour. The clarification of where the Super Nintendo World will be built in Florida has not yet been announced.)
