The American sign language interpreter will now appear at all White House press conferences

“As part of this government’s accessibility and inclusion efforts, starting today we will have an ASL, an American sign language interpreter for our daily press conferences,” said Psaki at Monday’s press conference.

“The president is committed to building a more inclusive, fairer and more accessible America for all Americans, including Americans with disabilities and their families.”

The first interpreter was identified only as Heather and appeared virtually at the bottom of the screen while Psaki made his comments.

The government was praised for having the Oath of Fidelity signed simultaneously with its recitation in office last Wednesday.

The move set a different tone than the previous government, which was prosecuted in August by the National Association of the Deaf and five American deaf people for not providing ASL interpreters at Covid-19 meetings.
A federal judge ordered the Trump administration in September to provide ASL interpreters on instructions that began on October 1, either in person or by video.
