Like the cases that come with most other noise-canceling headphones, the protective case closes around the AirPod Max and closes, providing total protection. You can store the headphones alone or with the Apple case, if for any reason you want. Inside, you will find a plush lining to prevent scratches; is the same extremely soft lining that Waterfield uses on laptop bags from handbags like Leather Messenger. (I have this bag and I can confirm that the plush lining is absurdly soft.) There is also an inner mesh bag that can hold a 20 w power brick and charging cables.

There is also an AirPods Max specific smart feature inside: a magnetic “butterfly” separates the two headphones and activates the headphones’ low power mode. Although AirPods Max eventually goes into low-power mode, it is good that the Waterfield’s enclosure duplicates the only useful feature that Apple has built into its own case.
On the outside, two zippers close the enclosure, which means you can leave it slightly open and connect the AirPod Max to charge it. There is also a handle at the top, which should make it easier to remove the case from the backpack. The cover also has two more external pockets: a mesh back pocket for quick access and a front zippered pocket for things you want to protect. The front exterior comes in brown leather with a waxed canvas finish or red, blue or black leather with black nylon finish.

I’ve been using Waterfield products for years, so I must admit it may be biased – but I also have the experience of knowing that they often make really smart decisions on their projects, whether it’s a general purpose laptop bag or a case made for a specific gadget like This one. It doesn’t cost $ 99, but the company does everything by hand in small batches and the quality has always been consistent and excellent. There aren’t many other third-party cases on the market yet, but that should change soon if you want something a little cheaper. But the Waterfield’s protective case looks like a product with a smart design for headphones that absolutely need more protection than Apple offers.
