Finally! A way to make old family photos even scarier
Animate the Dead
Have you ever looked at old family photos and thought, “They just aren’t scary enough!” or “I’d like you to look more like the characters in The Polar Express,” possibly? Now they can! See: an online genealogy platform has developed AI that allows you to animate old family photos.
The genealogy website MyHeritage introduced a tool called Deep Nostalgia that leverages AI technology to animate old photos of dead (or living) relatives.
For example, here are the strange results of what happened when we used the tool on a face that you can recognize, American President # 16, Abe Lincoln:

Deep nostalgia
The AI that Deep Nostalgia uses to get these animations is a bit like that used in Deep Fakes.
After uploading the photo to MyHeritage, it is processed by Deep Nostalgia and animated based on a set of gestures and movements previously registered by a model.
And yes, you can animate multiple faces in one photo at the same time.
Scary or magical?
MyHeritage readily admits that the new tool can be potentially polarizing.
“Some people love the Deep Nostalgia feature and consider it magical,” says MyHeritage on the Deep Nostalgia page, “while others find it scary and don’t like it. In fact, the results can be controversial and it is difficult to remain indifferent to this technology. “
So while it is easy to mock this tool, it is undeniably a fascinating and attractive application of AI – not to mention that it can allow many people to reconnect with their loved ones a long time ago through technology, which is always fantastic.
But also, you can do strange things like that.
