Texas’s deep freeze causes electricity prices to rise by 10,000

How Winter Storm Uri holds Texas in a deep freezing, the state’s energy infrastructure has left millions unheated, promoting dangerously cold conditions and now an increase in energy prices.

CNN Business reports that electricity prices have jumped more than 10,000 percent since a heavy snowfall caused widespread power cuts.

State officials have noticed that the lack of winter readiness at Texas mills is, at least in part, the cause of the mass blackouts, despite the state being known for its oil reserves.

Historical Records the lowest temperatures ever witnessed in Texas are said to be -23 degrees Fahrenheit in February 1899 and again in February 1933. Later, in 1956, February again recorded the greatest amount of monthly snow for the Lone Star State, with 36 inches.

Earlier this week, some temperatures in the state dropped down at about 13 degrees Fahrenheit in Houston. Temperatures since recovered at about 37 degrees, with people still surviving the cold without power.
