Texas reports more than 1,900 new cases of coronavirus; Tarrant adds 11 deaths, 259 cases

Across the state, an additional 1,982 cases of coronavirus were reported on Sunday, including 1,905 new cases and 77 older cases that were recently reported by laboratories.

The state also added 59 deaths from COVID-19, bringing its number to 46,413.

Of the new cases, 1,677 were confirmed and 228 were likely. Of the oldest cases, 72 were confirmed and five were likely.

The total number of cases in the state is now 2,745,161, including 2,366,494 confirmed and 378,667 probable.

There are 3,446 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 690 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. On Saturday, 4.4% of patients in the region of the hospital that covers the Dallas-Fort Worth area were patients with COVID-19 – below the 15% limit the state uses to define high hospitalizations.

The seven-day average positivity rate across the state for molecular testing, based on the date of collection of the test sample, was 5.81% on Saturday. For the antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 3%. A molecular test, sometimes called a PCR test, is considered more accurate; an antigen test is also called a rapid test. Governor Greg Abbott said a positivity rate above 10% is a cause for concern.

According to the state, 6,275,169 people in Texas received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, while 3,148,130 – 12.6% of the state’s population aged 16 and over – are fully vaccinated.

Dallas County

Dallas County officials no longer release new coronavirus data on Sundays. Figures that would previously be reported on Sundays will be released on Mondays.

On Saturday, the total county cases were 288,216 – 250,531 confirmed and 37,685 probable. The death toll was 3,384.

According to state data, 513,451 people in Dallas County received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, while 258,355 – 12.8% of the county’s population aged 16 or older – are fully immunized.

Tarrant County

Tarrant County reported 11 deaths and 259 cases on Sunday.

The latest victims are eight men and three women who were between 50 and 80 years old.

Six victims were from Fort Worth, three from Arlington and one from Grapevine and North Richland Hills. Everyone had underlying health problems.

Of the new cases, 183 were confirmed and 76 were likely. The numbers bring the county’s total cases to 249,007, including 210,596 confirmed and 38,411 probable. The death toll is 3,209.

According to the city, 226 people were hospitalized with the virus until this Friday.

According to the state, 384,693 people in Tarrant County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 209,901 – 13.2% of the county’s population aged 16 and over – are fully vaccinated.

Collin County

The state added a new death and zero cases to Collin County totals on Sunday.

No details about the latest victim were available.

The county’s total cases are 85,550, including 71,378 confirmed and 14,172 probable. The death toll is 780.

According to the city, 160 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state, 243,492 people in Collin County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 126,774 – 15.7% of the county’s population aged 16 and over – are fully vaccinated.

Denton County

Denton County officials no longer report new coronavirus data on Sundays.

As of Friday, the county had a total of 70,885 COVID-19 cases, including 52,722 confirmed and 18,163 probable cases. The death toll stood at 453.

According to the state, 168,175 people in Denton County received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 99,542 – 14.2% of the county’s population aged 16 and over – are fully vaccinated.

The Texas Department of Health Services has taken over reports from these other counties in North Texas. In some counties, new data may not be reported every day. The last numbers are:

  • Rockwall County: 10,936 cases (8,952 confirmed and 1,984 likely), 143 deaths.
  • Kaufman County: 15,331 cases (12,946 confirmed and 2,385 probable), 232 deaths.
  • Ellis County: 21,650 cases (18,304 confirmed and 3,346 probable), 300 deaths.
  • Johnson County: 19,078 cases (16,361 confirmed and 2,717 probable), 352 deaths.
