Texas reports 197 more deaths from COVID-19, 3,636 cases

DALLAS – Texas reported an additional 197 deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday, after a steady decline in the number of people hospitalized with the coronavirus disease.

The Texas Department of Health Services also reported 2,921 new confirmed cases of the virus on Sunday and another 715 probable cases. The state has reported more than 2.28 million confirmed cases since the pandemic began and 42,936 deaths in total.

The actual number of cases is believed to be much higher because many people have not been tested and some who get sick have no symptoms.

There were 5,696 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Texas on Saturday, the most recent day for which state data was available. This is a decline of more than 1,400 in the previous week.

In the past week, more than 15% of COVID-19 tests in Texas were positive, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. University researchers say Texas has totally vaccinated more than 6% of its population.

For most people, coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that go away in weeks. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause serious illness and be fatal.
