Texas Governor Abbott reports COVID outbreak, there is no ‘usable running water’ in the detention facility for migrants

Texas Governor Greg Abbott joined “America Reports” on Friday with an exclusive update on conditions at two facilities where migrants are being held after crossing the US-Mexico border.

ABBOTT: We know that this is a crisis. What I learned in the last hour shows that we are now dealing with a humanitarian disaster.

I need to talk to you about two of the three locations where migrants are being held in Texas … in addition to the Dallas location, there is the location in Carrizo Springs, which is in South Texas, as well as in Midland.

What we learned in Midland, just in the last hour, [are] two things. One is that there is no proven drinking water on site. They were using well water that the Texas Environmental Quality Commission informed the federal government that it has not proven to be safe. There is no way to say what may be there, including the possibility of arsenic. Therefore, the Texas Environmental Quality Commission is evaluating water, running water. Therefore, there is no viable and usable running water on site in Midland.

In addition, more than 10% of migrants in Midland have tested positive for COVID-19. In addition, you mentioned the location of Carrizo Springs. We also learned, in the last hour, that more than 10% of the population of that place had a positive test for COVID-19 … Whenever we are dealing with the large flow of people crossing the border, it would be a humanitarian crisis and a great challenge. now, knowing the magnitude of the spread of COVID in these areas. This is occurring during the course of a pandemic and is putting lives at risk right now.
