Texas broke its daily record of coronavirus cases on Tuesday.
The state reported 26,990 new cases of COVID-19, breaking the previous daily record set less than a week ago, according to Bloomberg News.
The count of new coronavirus cases on Tuesday was 41 percent higher than the previous record, which was set on December 23.
Separately, the state has set a new record for hospitalizations for COVID-19, the agency reported, with 11,775.
Texas, like many southern and western states, has struggled to contain a second wave of the virus that has taken over the country in recent months.
The state saw its seven-day average positivity rate remain above 15 percent last week, reported the Texas Tribune.
“If the positivity test rate exceeds 10%, this is one of the red flags that we started looking at,” reported Governor Greg Abbott (R) Tribune in early May.
Abbott on Tuesday was due to receive a coronavirus vaccine in an attempt to increase public confidence in its safety and effectiveness.
As of Wednesday, more than 1.6 million cases of the coronavirus were reported in Texas and about 28,000 people died in the state from contracting the disease.
