While Texans prefer the first scenario, the 25-year-old superstar quarterback certainly wants the second, and there are a number of potential suitors.
Watson will be worth an absurd acquisition – probably a trio of choices in the first round, at the very least. However, a no-trade clause is present in your contract. This means that if a deal is reached, Watson will need to approve it, regardless of the team on the other side.
This shouldn’t be a problem if the Jets wanted to come to terms with Houston. According to a source linked to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, Watson would approve a switch to Florham Park due to his “affection for the new Jets coach, Robert Saleh”, as Vacchiano writes.
The Jets are not supposed to be at the top of Watson’s list, but due to the negative effects in Houston, that “list” may eventually become obsolete.
“In reality, however, the top of his list could be, ‘Anywhere but Houston’,” said the source, by Vacchiano. “If he really wants to leave, why would he say ‘No’ to any negotiations?”
The font may turn out to be correct. Watson seems to want nothing to do with the organization that selected him in the opening round of the 2017 draft, to the point that he ended up agreeing to an exchange, no matter which team makes the move to acquire it.
It makes sense that Watson wants to play for Saleh. He may be a defensive coach who was previously the defensive boss in San Francisco, but he is a highly respected individual in this league that players will apparently play hard to play, regardless of the team he leads.
Watson would probably also like to play under the newly hired Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur. LaFleur previously served as coordinator of the 49ers’ pass game and helped execute a pass attack in San Francisco that was successful despite dealing with inconsistent and / or talentless quarterbacks.
