Test your streaming video quality with the Ookla Speedtest app update

Ookla Speedtest, an application used to test metrics like upload and download speeds, has updated its iOS app to allow users to test the quality of streaming from the Internet. The trial is free and is currently only available with the iOS app, with more platforms coming.

In an announcement about the update, Ookla says the test works by playing a video to measure how well the video can be transmitted on your network, providing a more accurate measurement than you would get by estimating the quality of the streaming based on other metrics.

“While the speed of the network will certainly affect your video experience, providers routinely prioritize video traffic differently than other traffic, says Ookla. “This means that video can perform very differently from the rest of the things you do online, no matter how fast your network’s download speed is.”

“If the results of your video test reveal that you often cannot transmit well, you can use your video test history to defend yourself when talking to your provider.”

You will find the new test on a tab at the bottom of the application. Touch the video icon to start testing your network’s video streaming quality.

IOS users can download the Speedtest by Ookla app from the App Store.
