Tesla unveils new center console in electric SUV Model Y

Tesla started presenting its new center console in the Model Y electric SUV after bringing it to the Model 3 last year.

At the end of last year, Tesla released an updated version of the Model 3 with several updated features.

One of the biggest changes was a new center console between the two front seats.

Tesla got rid of the shiny piano black finish and replaced it with a matte finish.

Instead of having a phone charger added to the top section, it has now been embedded in the top section of the console, which is now wrapped in faux leather material on all sides.

The center section now slides open instead of with an inversion system in the previous version.

This system is known to be fragile at times for some owners, while the new sliding system is more robust and less likely to remain open.

The new center console was only integrated into the new Model 3 and not the Model Y, despite the fact that the two vehicles shared an interior before the changes.

Now, a few months later, TMC member joeinsac found some new Tesla Model Ys at Tesla’s center in Rocklin, California, and they were equipped with the new center console:

One of the vehicles had a 122,778 VIN and a construction date of 9/2/2021, which can give us an indication of when Tesla made the change to the Model Y.

However, the automaker still shows the old center console in the online configurator for the electric SUV:

Therefore, it is not clear whether all new Model Y vehicles are being built with the new center console or whether Tesla is still making the transition from the interior.

Sometimes, Tesla is known for making hardware changes gradually whenever they are ready and still producing some vehicles with some older hardware.
