Tesla stops taking orders for the basic Model Y

We hope you haven’t decided on that new Standard Y Range Model. Electrek learned, Tesla quietly stopped taking orders for the ‘crossover’ version of the electric crossover a few weeks after launch. At the moment, you will have to spend at least $ 48,990 for the Long Range four-wheel drive variant ($ 1,000 less than before) if you want more interior space than the Model 3 can offer.

It is not clear why Tesla abandoned the standard range trim, or whether this is a temporary move or not. We asked Tesla for a comment, but the EV maker is believed to have dissolved its public relations team.

It would be a strange decision if it were permanent. Tesla cut the price of the basic Model Y to $ 39,990 just a few days earlier, in an apparent effort to increase sales – this would clearly have the opposite effect. It may represent a pause while Tesla handles a backlog, reorganizes production or decides that it cannot sell the Standard Range vehicle for a while.

If nothing else, the removal highlights complaints about Tesla’s sales strategy. The company’s frequent price adjustments can make its EVs more affordable than those of veteran automakers, many of whom wait until the years of the new model to lower prices or add features. However, inconsistency also makes it difficult to know when it is a good time to buy. You can postpone a purchase only to see an offer disappear without warning, leaving you no choice but to wait or buy an alternative.
