Tesla stops taking orders for cheaper Y model in hard-to-follow updates

Tesla stopped taking orders for the cheaper version of the electric SUV Model Y and removed it from its online configurator just a month after the vehicle’s launch.

The change comes amid broader changes in prices and configurators that are becoming difficult to keep up with.

Last month, Tesla launched a new Y Standard Range RWD model with a 244-mile range.

The launch was surprising considering CEO Elon Musk said Tesla will not produce the Model Y version because he said the range would be “unacceptably low” in less than 250 miles.

Tesla launched the version of the vehicle with an EPA estimated range of 244 miles and a starting price of $ 42,000.

Last week, the automaker surprised again by reducing the price of the new basic version of the Model Y by $ 2,000 just a month after launch.

The price change was part of a broader price update across the entire Model 3 and Model Y line.

Now, just a few days later, Tesla confuses us all by stopping to take orders for the new Model Y Standard Range RWD and removing it completely from its online configurator:

As usual, Tesla gave no reason behind this sudden change in the Model Y line.

The Model Y Standard Range has also disappeared from Tesla’s Canadian online configurator.

Along with the removal of the base version of the Model Y, Tesla also reduced the price of the long-range AWD Y model by $ 1,000 to $ 48,990.

This version of the electric SUV, which is now becoming the base version, was the only one not to receive a price change in last week’s update.

Electrek’s Take

These Tesla moves are difficult to follow.

It is not clear whether the Standard Range of the Model Y has been canceled altogether or whether Tesla is taking a break to take orders for the electric SUV version.

As we reported earlier, we thought it was a big move for Tesla to launch the vehicle and that, despite Elon’s earlier comment about the Model Y version, we thought it would sell like hotcakes.

Now it’s over. At least for a while.

We have to keep in mind that all of these price changes in the US are taking place amid the growing possibility that the federal government will bring back the tax credit for Tesla buyers, which could be affecting Tesla’s sales in the market a lot until that we have more clarity about the situation.
