Tesla on autopilot crashes Michigan patrol car

A Tesla in autopilot mode crashed into a Michigan state patrol car on Wednesday morning, according to a local report.

The car, driven by a 22-year-old man, hit the police vehicle in the Lansing area at about 1:10 am, when the policeman was responding to another car that hit a deer, WLNS-TV reported.

No one was injured in the accident. The Tesla driver received two quotes for driving with his license suspended and not moving.

The National Road Traffic Safety Administration sent a team to Michigan to investigate.

It is the second time in less than a week that a Tesla has crashed in the state. In the first Detroit incident, officials said it appears that the driver was not using the car’s autopilot mode, according to WDIV-TV.

Tesla previously said that its autopilot and “fully autonomous steering” are driver assistance systems and that the driver must be ready to intervene at all times.

The company has been criticized by the National Transportation Safety Board for not properly monitoring drivers to make sure they are paying attention.
