Tesla obtains perfect equality rating for LGBTQ workers for the 6th consecutive year

The Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index awarded Tesla as one of the Best Companies to Work for LGBTQ Equality in 2021. The award was published in the 2021 Corporate Equality Index, recently published by HRC, which evaluates the equality of lesbians, gays , bisexual, transgender and queer in the workplace.

The announcement was shared on Tesla’s LinkedIn page, where the electric car maker noted that it is proud to have received a perfect 100% score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index for six consecutive years.

As noted by the Human Rights Campaign, its metrics for the Corporate Equality Index 2021 involve four criteria: Protection of the Workforce (30 points); Inclusive Benefits (30 points), Support for Inclusive Culture and Corporate Social Responsibility (40 points) and Responsible Citizenship (-25 points for records of anti-LGBTQ practices).

A more detailed analysis of each metric shows a focus on dedicated programs that ensure that employees of all genders and sexual orientations are treated equally. In the Workforce Protection criteria, for example, companies are classified based on the presence of policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity or expression for all operations. In the Inclusive Benefit criteria, companies are classified according to whether their medical and mild benefits are the same for all genders and sexual orientations.

Supporting an Inclusive Culture and Corporate Social Responsibility requires companies to implement a series of in-house LGBTQ training and education programs, as well as outreach efforts to expand the community. Contractors and suppliers should also not face discrimination regarding their gender identity and / or sexual preference.

Putting aside Elon Musk’s disdain for the pronouns’ aesthetics, Tesla’s equality programs met the standards set by the Human Rights Campaign, allowing the electric car maker to maintain its position as one of the best workplaces in the United States for the LGBTQ community. This is quite remarkable for a US-based automaker, considering that veteran automakers like Ford Motor Co. only received a score of 80 points and General Motors received 90 points on this year’s Corporate Equality Index. Even Berkshire Hathaway, a company headed by one of the most respected philanthropists in the world, scored a sad 20 points.
