Terry Porter Out as Head Coach at the University of Portland

Former Portland Trail Blazers All-Star Terry Porter was fired from his position as Principal Technician at the University of Portland. UP released an ad today, which ESPN’s Jeff Borzello relayed.

“I would like to thank Coach Porter for his services to the university,” said Portland Vice President of Athletics Scott Leykam in a statement. “The timing of these changes is never ideal, especially with all the disruptions this season that were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ultimately, it was decided that it was better to move on now and focus on the future of the program and the search for the next coach.”

According to the report, the ex-Trail Blazer has been a coach since 2016, and the team has not had a winning season under his direction.

Terry Porter was chosen 24th overall by the Trail Blazers in 1985. He spent a decade playing in Portland and made an appearance with the team in the NBA finals twice, in 1990 and 1992. He played in the NBA for 17 years. In 2008, the Blazers withdrew the number 30 in honor of him. Porter was also included in the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame two years later, in 2010.
