Terry Fontenot “outperformed” Champ Kelly in the Broncos GM survey

According to Mike Klis of 9NEWS Denver, New Orleans Saints vice president / assistant general manager Terry Fontenot “overtook” Chicago’s Champ Kelly in the Broncos general manager race. Vikings George Paton remains the most likely choice for Klis, but Fontenot really impressed the Broncos’ coaches.

Fontenot serves as assistant vice president / general manager of Saints and has been a key mentor behind building the team list for the Super Bowl candidate he is today.

He’s been with the team for 18 years. During his time with the Saints, he worked his way through the organization and, more recently, served as assistant vice president / general manager of professional personnel. Fontenot spent a total of seven seasons as a professional scout and another seven seasons as director of professional scouting with Saints. Therefore, he has enough training and experience to be an NFL general manager.

However, Fontenot has other suitors out there who now seem more likely than him to join the Broncos. The Atlanta Falcons are having a second interview with Fontenot and he is considered a “Strong finalist” for the vacant general management position at Falcons. In addition, a pair of Joe Brady / Terry Fontenot Head Coach / General Manager is also the hot rumor now for the Falcons. So it looks like we can cross Fontenot off the Broncos’ general management research list.

It looks like it’s a two-man race realistically for the position of general manager of the Broncos and that George Paton seems to have if he wants to. Adding Champ Kelly to a role under Paton allowing the two to work side by side is also something that continues to be rumored as a potential outcome as well.

I think we are approaching the finish line of this survey and it looks like we might be able to hear something tomorrow.
