While domestic terrorists invaded the US Capitol in an attempted coup on Wednesday, the world was glued to screens watching the drama unfold. This includes the world of sports, as athletes from the past and present have assumed what was happening.

Basketball legend Bill Russell questioned the security response, wondering how things might have looked different had the insurgents been black, while noticing the presence of a Confederate flag on Capitol Hill.

Rex Chapman, another former NBA player and now a prolific tweeter, also marveled at the Capitol Police refraining from violently dispersing the crowd, as he did with so many protests from the Black Lives Matter last summer.

Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman followed Chapman’s tweet, calling the incident what it was:

Stroman had more to say, calling back the summer protests and the National Guard’s response.

Ditto for Ravens wide receiver Dez Bryant, who knew that if there was a different racial makeup in the group that attacked the Capitol, many people would be killed.

Free agent outfielder Delino DeShields Jr. had the same kind of astonished reaction to all this as so many of us, just astonished to see this happening.

Similar to his sister, guard Chicago Sky Diamond DeShields.

Defensive niners in the back Richard Sherman has the following to say about these domestic terrorists:

And the safety of the Broncos Justin Simmons made this cunning remark:

While Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy wondered exactly how to classify the criminals who invaded the Capitol …

… The guard of freedom, Layshia Clarendon, knew exactly what they were doing.

Of course, as with so many social and sporting issues these days, it was the WNBA ahead of the curve.

Tim Tebow?

Not much.
