Tennessee Floods Arrest Residents of Homes and Roads, Causing Rescues: Reports

A major overnight flash flood in central Tennessee was leaving several people trapped by rising waters, according to reports.

The accounts included reports from emergency responders assisting people in apartment complexes and drivers traveling along roads in flooded areas.

“Water is a very powerful, powerful thing and it doesn’t take much to sweep your car,” commented Katy Morgan, chief meteorologist at FOX 17 in Nashville.

Heavy rains were expected to continue in the region for several hours in the early hours of Sunday, with warnings in effect until 4:30 am for Nashville, Franklin, Brentwood and Mount Juliet, reported the Nashville newspaper The Tennessean. Other alerts were in effect until 7 am

“Major flash floods are occurring with several roads, interstates and houses flooded with water rescues in progress!” the National Meteorological Service wrote in a message. “Please stay at home and don’t travel!”

On Saturday afternoon, a heavy storm in Lexington, Tennessee, caused significant damage, the newspaper reported. A tornado had been warned for the area, but it was not immediately clear whether a tornado had actually hit.
