Tenchu: Stealth Assassins Creator wants to make a new game for PS5 [Updated]

The creator of Tenchu: Stealth Assassins and president of Acquire, Takuma Endo said he would like to create a new Tenchu game for the PlayStation 5 – but nothing is formally underway right now.In an interview with Weekly Famitsu (translated by Gematsu), Takuma Endo said he would like to “create a new Tenchu from scratch for the PlayStation 5 generation if the possibility arises”, but also recognizes that it is currently difficult.

This difficulty probably stems from the fact that Tenchu’s IP is currently owned by FromSoftware, which launched Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in 2019. In the early stages, Sekiro was being developed as a successor to Tenchu, but From Software ended up deciding to take development in a different direction. It is unclear whether the developer has plans for the Tenchu franchise at this time.In August last year, Acquire registered a trademark for “Stealth Assassins” in Japan, which sparked rumors that a remake or spiritual successor was in progress. In the same interview with Famitsu, Endo mentions that it was just a formality, as the brand had expired.

Elsewhere, Endo mentioned that Acquire plans to launch an “indies brand” separate from its main production, with the first title coming “in late 2021”. Here is our analysis of the 2019 Sekiro, which we scored 9.5, praising its “stealth action focused on the FromSoftware formula”.

In 1998, we awarded Tenchu: Stealth Assassins with a 9/10 review, calling it “the PlayStation game par excellence. Hard-core, smart, bloody and fun as hell.”
