Tencent acquires majority stake in Don’t Starve Developer Klei Entertainment

Tencent acquired a majority stake in Klei Entertainment, the studio behind games like Don’t Starve

and Mark of the Ninja. Klei Entertainment founder Jamie Cheng took to the the studio’s forums to announce the news and assure fans that “as part of this agreement, Klei maintains full autonomy of creation and operations in all aspects of the studio, including projects, talents and more.”As for what is going to change, Cheng mentions that although there are some “boring accounting changes” that will need to be adjusted, he will still be running the studio as before, without “changes in staff, projects or other operations.”

Cheng continued to discuss why this decision was made and, among other things, how it will help Klei Entertainment to continue doing what it does best – “creating unique experiences that no one else can do”.

“Klei has been around for 15 years and we have made many changes over the years to respond to a changing world,” wrote Cheng. “Consistently, my desire has been to allow people to do their best creative work, learn and grow, not have to worry about finances and can enjoy life outside the studio. That hasn’t changed. This partnership helps us navigate an ever-changing industry and help us focus on what we do best: creating unique experiences that no one else can

Tencent, which invested in other companies that produced titles like Path of Exile, League of Legends, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Clash of Clans, Fortnite and more, helped Klei distribute his games in China in 2016. Also, Don’t Starve Together was the first game to be released on Tencent’s WeGame platform.

These previous collaborations helped to make Klei’s decision to allow this acquisition, as Cheng feels that he is the only company that “would allow us to maintain the level of control we demand.”

Klei Entertainment’s newest title, Griftlands, is currently available for PC on Early Access and is also due out on Nintendo Switch later this year.
