Telegram for iOS updated with new Clubhouse-type features for voice chats, more

The popular Telegram messaging app was updated today with a focus on audio communication. The latest version of Telegram for iOS brings a new version of the app’s Voice Chats feature with a handful of improvements.

Telegram first introduced support for voice chats in December, and today’s update features version 2.0 of the feature. The first major change here is that channel managers and public groups can now conduct voice chats “for millions of listeners”.

This feature is very similar to Clubhouse and Twitter Spaces. You can create a public link to the audio conversation and then share it with others and invite them to join the audio conversation. Telegram explains:

Channel administrators and public groups can now host voice chats for millions of live listeners. Public channel and group administrators can now create invitation links that open voice chat right away. Separate links can be made for speakers and listeners. That way, you won’t have to mute important guests when they join – and they can use a different link to promote the next chat in their communities.

To start a voice chat, open the profile of any group or channel where you are an administrator, tap (⋮) or (⋯) and select Start voice chat.

The update also includes support for recording conversations. Administrators can now record voice chat sounds to save them for later and post them so that people who missed the conversation can hear. The telegram informs that the chats being recorded are marked with a red light next to the title.

To complement this new voice chat platform, Telegram has a few other changes:

In chats where participants are muted, listeners can ring to raise their hands and alert managers that they want to speak.

The text of your biography is now visible in the list of participants, which you can use to detail your experience, interests, or just a little bit about yourself. This information can help administrators to find a good space for their questions or comments.

When joining a voice chat on a channel, users have the option to either sign in with their personal account or appear as one of their channels. Celebrities and public figures can use this to avoid drawing too much attention to their personal accounts.

The latest version of Telegram is available on the App Store now as a free update. It also includes other bug fixes and performance improvements.
