Teenage snowmobiler builds snow cave to wait for rescue

100 MILE HOUSE, British Columbia (CNN) – Canadian officials say a missing teenager was found alive thanks in part to his survival skills.

Authorities say the 17-year-old was riding a snowmobile on Saturday when he separated from three relatives.

After he got lost, the teenager dug a snow cave in a tree pit and crouched down with food and water to wait to be rescued.

It took the teams more than four hours to find him and he was transported off the mountain in good condition. He told the crew that he was prepared for a difficult night and was grateful to his rescuers.

South Cariboo Search and Rescue believes that the teenager’s action helped him to be found safely and reunited with his family.
