Teen SC collects thousands of food donations to needy colleagues

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) – A young man from Lowcountry has the mission of helping families in the school district to combat food insecurity.

There was a large corridor, and at the height of the food intake, you could barely walk because of the thousands of items that piled up each day. Even now, three weeks later, they are still receiving food donations for the school to help families in need.

“We ended up with more food than we knew what to do,” said school social worker Heather Kine.

The Guidance Department at Bluffton High School had a food supply for families in need.

“They said they had received an overwhelming number of reports that people needed food, personal care products, they couldn’t afford the electricity bill.”

When Tyler Shrewsbury, a veteran of Bluffton High, learned that there was food insecurity among his classmates, he wanted to help

“Normally, when we collect food, we probably bring only two or maybe 400 items. 400 items would be crazy. Because we’re usually just doing it internally. “

Instead of settling for 400, he had an idea.

“What if I get to the community? There are neighborhoods around here with thousands of houses. And I did. And it just exploded. “

With the help of local neighborhoods, Tyler and his friends brought over 10,000 items.

“We stopped counting 10,000. And we help more than 50 families. We help all families in Bluffton High and then the other two schools, Bluffton Elementary and Bluffton Middle. “

Now, Tyler is taking this experience and growing it. He established his own non-profit organization called Lowcountry Gives. He wants to recreate the success of this food campaign across the state. “My goal would eventually be to go to the entire school guidance department in South Carolina.”

He says that even when he goes to college, he is planning to stay active and help as many people as he can.
