A teenage employee at a Kroger grocery store in the Atlanta area reportedly stole nearly $ 1 million by making several fraudulent returns, according to local authorities.
While the New York Times According to reports, authorities accuse Tre Brown, 19, of profiting from more than 40 fake refunds using multiple credit cards. Brown reportedly made the transactions, which ranged from $ 75 to more than $ 87,000, over a two-week period in December and January, while a supermarket compliance officer was absent from his post.
Brown reportedly spent stolen funds on two cars, guns, clothes, shoes and other items. It is unclear how much of the money, which totaled $ 980.00, he spent on these various items. According to police, the teenager destroyed a Chevrolet Camaro he bought before his arrest.
The alleged theft was detected by an employee of the Kroger company who reported it to the police. Gwinnett County police told the Times that a large amount of the total was returned after Brown’s arrest on January 14. He now faces a charge of possession theft.
Brown worked at the Kroger store at the fuel center. Collin Flynn, a spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Police Department, told the Times that the former employee claimed to be returning lottery tickets, whose detectives were trying to determine whether they had been manufactured or not.
Kroger thanked the Gwinnett County Police Department, but declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. Brown was released on $ 11,200 bail on the same day of his arrest.
