Teen dies after saving younger brother when they fell into a frozen lake

An officer who responded to the rescue mission also died, officials said.

A teenager died after saving her brother when the two fell into a frozen lake in Ohio, officials said.

A police officer who responded to the drowning incident also died, officials said.

The 16-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy fell on the ice near the boat docks at Rocky Fork State Park in Hillsboro late Tuesday night, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The 911 call came around 6:30 pm

By the time the Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District arrived, the girl was under the ice, according to Lieutenant Branden Jackman. The water was 36 degrees, he said.

The boy was taken to the hospital in stable condition, but his sister was recovered by divers who did not respond, officials said. She was not publicly identified by the authorities.

“She got him out of there before she succumbed,” Jackman told WCPO, an affiliate of ABC in Cincinnati.

While at the scene, Jason Lagore, an officer in the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, suffered a medical emergency and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the department said. He did not provide details about the medical emergency.

A 15-year veteran in the department, Lagore founded his first K-9 academy and led the Parks and Vessels Division’s K-9 training program.

“Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of Officer Jason Lagore, who died in the line of duty last night,” said Ohio Department of Natural Resources director Mary Mertz in a statement on Wednesday. “Our policemen and their families carry a unique and challenging burden of responsibility, and we are deeply grateful for their service.”

Lagore leaves his wife, two small children and a K-9 partner, Sarge, the department said.

On Wednesday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered the flags to be lowered on public buildings and land in Highland County and several other locations “in honor of his life and service.”

Jackman had a message for the Ohioans the day after the deadly incident.

“Don’t go on the ice,” he told WCPO. “It caused a very bad tragedy last night.”
