A technology company apologized after a list of Bay Area jobs was posted on LinkedIn requiring applicants to be “non-Asian.”

Aptude, an IT consulting firm, is headquartered in Chicago, but has offices around the world. On its website, it says the company helps customers “hire IT staff, fill a temporary development position or assemble a project team”. ABC7 reported for the first time that a woman looking at Bay Area job ads on LinkedIn noticed an open position for an Aptude data analyst. The paper listed a requirement for “non-Asian” candidates in its description section.

The woman’s boyfriend posted a screenshot of the ad on social media, which has Menlo Park as his location, where he drew attention. The list was on the air for about a week before being removed after the social media reaction.

“Note that the job posting was brought to our attention on Tuesday, when we immediately took steps to remove it from all channels and investigate how it happened,” Aptude told ABC7 in a statement. “Our investigation revealed that a misunderstood communication was posted by an individual with no conceivable discriminatory intent. Aptude took steps to ensure that these posts did not occur in the future.”

Aptude’s statement no longer explains the “misunderstood communication” that resulted in the phrase “non-Asian” appearing on its list. A republished version of the list is available now.

LinkedIn, which published the job posting, also apologized.
