Are the Bears about to go all-in for Russell Wilson?
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported last week that the Bears were “prioritizing” an exchange for the Seahawks quarterback, who is reportedly frustrated with his current situation in Seattle.
Peter King of NBC Sports subsequently poured cold water on the rumor, pointing to the lack of Chicago assets to close a deal, but Colin Cowherd of FS1 hit back on Friday with a jet of gasoline.
“They said the Chicago Bears are trying to make a move against Russell Wilson, and they are trying to create a move that is so good that Seattle can’t say ‘no’,” said Cowherd at FS1.
So, how are the Bears going to make this work? After all, they don’t have a viable quarterback or a high draft choice to offer. Chicago must choose 20th overall in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Well, as Cowherd explained on Friday, the Bears could offer five first-round choices to the Seahawks, who then could simultaneously run a separate deal for a QB.
A name to keep an eye on, according to Cowherd: Sam Darnold, currently on the New York Jets.
Darnold played ball in college at the USC, where the Seahawks’ head coach, Pete Carroll, has already coached, and the latter praised the 23-year-old in December.
“Is giving up Russell Wilson the ideal? No. And they would like him to go to AFC because of the NFC, and Chicago knows that, ”said Cowherd on Friday. “… But Chicago, which hasn’t had a legitimate quarterback – a great quarterback – since Sid Luckman. They are unaware of this position. “
The Bears are definitely a step or two below the Packers at NFC North, and it’s hard to imagine that change as long as Aaron Rodgers remains in Green Bay and Chicago continues to fumble in his search for quarterbacks.
An exchange for Wilson would obviously make things much more interesting in Windy City. It remains to be seen whether the Seahawks are willing to leave their franchise and, if so, whether the Bears can really build a commercial package that is attractive enough.
