Teachers, child caregivers, plus high-risk Vermonters eligible for vaccination next week March 2, 2021 04:51 by NewsDesk With the Johnson & Johnson vaccine coming online and the federal pharmacy program on the rise, Governor Phil Scott announced on Tuesday that school officials, child caregivers and more Vermonters with high-risk conditions would become eligible to receive the Covid vaccine. -19 as of next week. Phase 5 of the state’s vaccination program will open on March 8, Scott said, and will include high-risk Vermonters aged 55 and over. As of March 15, those with the same high-risk conditions aged 16 and over will become eligible. School officials and child caregivers will also be eligible on March 8. More information on how to apply will be released on Friday. School vaccination clinics will provide the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine, but school staff and daycare staff will also have access to the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines through the state’s partnership with Walgreens. Government officials said they expected all school staff to be vaccinated in the first weeks of April. “These are important steps forward, and with more offerings, Vermonters can be optimistic that we are on the way to being in a very good place in late spring or early summer,” said Scott. The Scott administration pressured local district authorities to reopen schools more fully, and the governor said he would like to see all elementary and high school students back to school five days a week in April. Educators responded that mitigation measures should not be relaxed without, at the very least, additional protection for school staff and teachers. “Nobody wants to see students returning to state classrooms more than teachers, educators, bus drivers, cafeteria employees, janitors, school nurses and administrators. But, as we have said all along, this can only happen when it is proven safe to do so. Vaccinating school staff is a big step in the right direction, ”said Vermont-NEA President Don Tinney in a statement. This story will be updated.
