The world’s first study of whether the rave drug MDMA can be used to treat alcohol addiction has produced “incredibly exciting” results, British researchers said today.

During a test in Bristol, people with alcohol problems received controlled doses of MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, during two psychotherapy sessions.

In the months that followed, they were much more successful in limiting alcohol consumption, compared to patients who received more traditional treatments.

Nine months after the sessions, 21 percent of those who participated in MDMA therapy consumed more than 14 units of alcohol a week, compared with 75 percent of a group that received standard NHS care.
