Taiwanese man fined $ 47,000 for violating domestic quarantine 7 times

(CNN) – A Taiwanese was fined $ 1 million in new Taiwanese dollars ($ 35,000) for repeatedly breaking the quarantine at his home.

The unidentified man, who lives in Taichung, central Taiwan, was quarantining his building after returning from a business trip to mainland China and raped him at least seven times, according to local media.

According to TTV News, the man left his building seven times in just three days to go shopping, fix his car and more. He reportedly got into a fight with one of his neighbors when they questioned him about leaving his home during quarantine.

The local Taichung government confirmed that the man returned from the mainland on 21 January. Taiwanese regulations require a 14-day quarantine.

The mayor of Taichung, Lu Shiow-yen, denounced the fact as “a serious offense” and added that the man “should receive severe punishments”.

In addition to the fine – which is the highest ever charged in Taiwan – the man will have to pay $ 3,000 NTD ($ 107) a day for the cost of his quarantine. The Taiwanese government has been compensating the quarantine $ 1,000 NTD ($ 35) per day, for which it will no longer be entitled.

Taiwan has been one of the biggest success stories in the world when it comes to containing the coronavirus. The self-managed island closed its border at the beginning, implemented mass testing and contact tracking and strictly applied quarantines.
In December 2020, a migrant worker from the Philippines was fined $ 3,500 for violating his quarantine for a total of eight seconds. The man, who was quarantined in a government-approved hotel, briefly stepped into the corridor outside his room and was captured by CCTV.

As a result of these tight controls, the island of 23 million people recorded only 889 cases of coronavirus and seven deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
