Taiwanese horror game ‘Devotion’ returns after controversy in China

After being removed from Steam and GOG, the Taiwanese horror game Devotion is back on sale. The developer Red Candle Games launched his own store with Devotion and your first game, Detention, both available in DRM-free formats, The Verge reported.

The game was not available for purchase after it was criticized on Steam, after reports that it contained an image mocking Chinese President Xi Jinping with a controversial Winnie-the-Pooh meme. Red Candle Games apologized for the incident, saying it never intended to have the image appear in the final version. However, Chinese authorities revoked their partner’s commercial license in China and Red Candle removed the game from Steam just a week after its release.

Devotion was scheduled to appear on the GOG last December, but the owner of CD Projekt Red decided not to list it “after receiving many messages from players”. Red Candle promised to keep trying to make the game available, and how it has finally managed to do so. “We hope to provide a direct and simple purchase channel for players interested in our games,” tweeted the company.
