Taco Bell announces that ‘Chicken Sandwich Taco’ will debut on menus nationwide in 2021

So much to think outside of the bread.

Like basically all other existing fast-food restaurants, Taco Bell has officially entered the so-called “chicken sandwich war” with a new “chicken sandwich taco” announced Monday morning.

The chain describes the item as a sandwich / taco hybrid, made with a crisp piece of completely white chicken that was marinated in jalapeno-infused buttermilk before being sprinkled with “bold Mexican spices” and wrapped in a tortilla topping. Next, the chicken is sandwiched into “a soft, iconic taco bun” and topped with a creamy chipotle sauce. The “spicy” version also comes with pickled jalapenos

The new items, which cost $ 2.49 each, will begin testing in Nashville and Charlotte on March 11. A national launch scheduled for the end of 2021.

“The Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco is a sandwich or taco, you ask? Well, it’s a sandwich AND a taco,” says a press release for the next item. “And you don’t have to explain yourself to be so delicious.”

The new items will be tested in Nashville and Charlotte, NC, starting March 11.

Taco Bell had already suggested the launch of a new item specifically designed to compete with the many chicken sandwiches that have already been announced in the main fast-food restaurants. In January, Liz Matthews, global head of food innovation at Taco Bell, teased the mysterious chicken item in an interview with Business Insider. She added that the offer would be launched sometime in the next 24 months, along with “all” of Taco Bell’s new ideas that were put aside during the pandemic.

“I think a lot of players out there are doing a great job, but what I will say is that we will stop that with what we will be doing with the chicken,” Matthews told Business Insider.

Taco Bell’s most recent announcement comes as more restaurants are preparing to enter the “chicken sandwich war” and compete with the popular Popeyes chicken sandwich. Among those preparing to launch their own new offerings (reminiscent of the Popeyes chicken sandwich) are McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s. Even KFC – a restaurant also owned by the parent company of Taco Bell, Yum! Brands – expanded its newest chicken sandwiches to restaurants across the country.
