T-Mobile has just announced a new monthly phone plan called Magenta Max, which the company says is designed for the 5G era. According to this press release, T-Mobile claims that Magenta Max is “the 5G consumer’s first and only smartphone plan that cannot slow you down based on the amount of data you use”. This makes it look like the operator is eliminating what is known as downgrading, where its speeds are subject to deceleration after you exceed a certain amount of data in a billing cycle.
“T-Mobile has illuminated the largest capacity 5G network available – a network so powerful that it can begin to unleash the power of 5G to provide unlimited premium data,” said the company. Magenta Max promises “4K UHD unlimited” video streaming compared to the DVD quality limit (or 1080p at best) that comes with many unlimited plans. T-Mobile is also extending the company’s “Netflix on Us” promotion to single-line customers.

Magenta Max replaces the previous Magenta Plus plan and will be available from February 24th. It includes 40 GB of high-speed tethering data, in addition to the usual advantages of T-Mobile, such as free Wi-Fi during Gogo’s flight, extensive international coverage and Scam Shield protection.
T-Mobile says the price is “$ 57 per line per month for three lines with autopay and monthly taxes and fees included”. For a limited time, this dropped to $ 47 per line per month for three lines. I asked how much the Max plan will cost for single line customers.
A lot of this sounds “too good to be true”, so I’m also looking for any asterisk or limit that T-Mobile isn’t talking about on the surface.
Along with Magenta Max, T-Mobile is also making changes to the main Magenta plan. He is raising the monthly depreciation threshold to 100 GB from the 50 GB he is currently in. Customers will also get more high-speed tethering data: it is now 5 GB compared to the previous 3 GB.
