Syracuse, NY – The Syracuse-Louisville men’s basketball game that was scheduled to be played on Wednesday night was postponed due to a positive coronavirus test and contact tracking within the Louisville program.
The Cardinals were scheduled to face Orange at 7 pm at the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, in a game that would give SU a chance to improve its status in the NCAA tournament bubble.
It would have been an opportunity for Syracuse to obtain a victory considered a Quadrant 2 victory by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. At the moment, Orange (10-5, 4-4) has only two wins considered in Quadrant 1 or 2 wins.
There are no obvious gaps in current schedules that would allow teams to compose the game, although the ACC could make some schedule changes or another cancellation could provide an opening. Syracuse is scheduled to play in Louisville on February 17th.
The Cardinals hosted Georgia Tech on Monday, winning 74-58. Syracuse last played on Saturday, winning a 76-73 home win over North Carolina.
Louisville’s senior associate athletic director Kenny Klein said Louisville is currently in Syracuse and expects to return home on Wednesday. The team does not consider staying in Syracuse to see if the game can be played on Thursday. He said the Cardinals tested every day this week, with all tests returning negative until the last batch.
Louisville is looking for a way to allow his program member to return to Louisville safely. Klein said the positive test came from a test done in Louisville, but did not return any results until the Cardinals arrived in Syracuse.
Syracuse’s next game is scheduled to be played now on Saturday, when Orange is scheduled to visit Clemson. The Tigers beat North Carolina at home 63-50 on Monday night. This will be an opportunity in quadrant 1 for orange.
