Suspended search for a boat carrying 20 people from the Bahamas to Florida

The United States Coast Guard said it was suspending the search for a boat bound for Florida with about 20 people on board.

The blue and white 29-foot Mako Cuddy Cabin left Bimini, Bahamas on Monday and is due to arrive in Lake Worth, Florida, about 10 miles south of Palm Beach. The District Seven Coast Guard received a report Tuesday that the boat had not reached its destination, according to a press release.

The Coast Guard and several other agencies searched an area of ​​about 17,000 square miles for more than three days. He announced on Friday that the search was suspended.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to the families of the missing people,” said Captain Stephen V. Burdian with the Seventh District Head of Response. “I encourage anyone with information about the people on board to contact us as soon as possible.”

A Coast Guard spokesman said on Saturday that the agency had no information about the people on board the boat. The search could be resumed if the Coast Guard obtains new information, the spokesman said.

Police in the Bahamas did not immediately return a request for comment.

Bimini is about 80 kilometers off the east coast of Florida.
