Suspected robbery dead, baby injured in police shooting in SW Houston, police said

HOUSTON – A suspect in theft is dead and a passerby’s baby was injured after a police officer shot him on Wednesday, Houston police said.

Police said the shooting took place on Block 7900 on the Southwest Freeway at about 11:35 pm.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers located a vehicle suspected of an assault. The suspect did not budge and a chase began, police said.

Investigators said the chase went to Beltway 8 and then to the secondary road on the Southwest Freeway. The suspect then fell and stopped at a gas station, Jack’s Grocery, on 7931 Southwest Freeway, police said.

“People need to think about other people’s lives before they do anything,” said Jack Abdullah, the owner of the gas station.

The police said the suspect then got out and jumped into another vehicle, where a mother was trying to add gas to her vehicle. When they approached the suspect, the police said they saw a gun.

Police said a 15-year-old HPD officer fired multiple shots at the suspect, killing him.

During the incident, investigators said a 1-year-old baby was shot while sitting in the back seat.

The police said the officers tried to give medical treatment to the baby and the suspect before the EMS arrived. The child was transported to the hospital in an ambulance under stable conditions, according to a statement.

“That lady and her son have to go through this. It is very worrying and I am sorry for the family, ”said Abdullah.

According to investigators, no police officers were injured during the incident.
