Suspect linked to Balcones Heights police shooting in Bexar County custody, sheriff says

SANTO ANTÓNIO – One of the two suspects wanted in connection with the murder of a Balcones Heights police officer is now in Bexar County custody, according to Sheriff Javier Salazar.

Salazar held a meeting on Friday about the extradition of Sijifredo Montemayor, 30, who will be charged with attempted capital murder.

Sijifredo Montemayor is suspected of driving the getaway car after his brother Wilfredo Montemayor shot Sergeant Joey Sepulveda of Balcones Heights, officials said. Wilfredo Montemayor remains at large while Sijifredo was arrested by police in Tamaulipas, Mexico, on Thursday night.

Sijifredo was discovered by Mexican authorities while trying to seek medical attention for a gunshot wound he suffered during the incident.

Sepúlveda, who was shot in the neck and shoulder, was seriously injured in the shooting, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon at block 6900 on Interstate 10. Sepúlveda is recovering from his injuries at the hospital.

Sijifredo Montemayor answered questions in English and Spanish when he was taken into custody on Friday night.

In Spanish, Sijifredo Montemayor said he is praying for Sepúlveda’s recovery.

Salazar said that Sijifredo Montemayor “surrendered” in Mexico, allowing for faster extradition.

Authorities are still trying to find out if a family member who lived in the house helped Sijifredo Montemayor escape to Mexico.

Although Sijifredo was captured in Mexico, Salazar said Wilfredo Montemayor is still in the San Antonio area. If you saw him, call BCSO at 210-335-6000.
