Suspect accused of shooting Balcones Heights police officer in custody, Salazar says

SANTO ANTÓNIO – A suspect accused of shooting a Balcones Heights police officer earlier this week is now in custody, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.

“Well, we got him. We are happy to bring Wilfredo Montemayor into custody today and it was not an easy task. Huge, huge amount of teamwork that involved this, ”said Salazar.

Wilfredo Montemayor was detained by BCSO SWAT deputies around 12:18 pm on Saturday, in block 2400 of NE Loop 410.

Sheriff Salazar said an investigator saw a man, who looked a lot like Wilfredo, leave the area this afternoon wearing a face mask and a hat that covered most of his face.

Wilfredo changed his appearance, as did his brother, according to Sheriff Salazar. Wilfredo shaved his head; however, his eyebrows still had trimmed wrinkles and that was what helped researchers to identify him.

The investigator, who was in disguise, made contact with Wilfredo, exchanged pleasantries, walked away and notified the police that he was the suspect they were looking for.

Wilfredo was arrested moments later, while walking along access road 410. Sheriff Salazar said that Wilfredo was caught off guard when groups of police officers appeared to arrest him. Even so, he cooperated with officials.

Wilfredo was carrying a loaded gun and narcotics in a pouch when he was arrested, Salazar said. He was forced to remove him when the officers arrested him, and he complied.

During Wilfredo’s interrogation, Salazar said it was shocking to hear the lack of remorse for his alleged actions in the shooting.

“It would freeze your blood to hear the lack of emotion in hearing you describe [the shooting], ”Salazar said.

Wilfredo’s arrest comes just a day after Wilfredo’s brother, Sijifredo Montemayor, 30, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Wilfredo and Sijifredo are facing a charge of attempted capital murder.

Sijifredo was discovered by Mexican authorities while trying to seek medical attention because of a gunshot wound he suffered during the incident.

Sgt. Sepúlveda, who was shot in the neck and shoulder, was seriously injured in the shooting, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon in block 6900 on Interstate 10.

On Saturday, the authorities said his recovery was going very well and the sergeant. Sepúlveda is making very good progress. He is still undergoing treatment at the hospital, but police said he is walking and doing very well, although he still has a long way to go in his recovery.

Sepulveda has been in the police for just over 25 years, according to the NBPD.

We will bring more updates as they become available.
