Salazar said the BCSO has been working around the clock on this case with the help of other Texas law enforcement agencies, and he believes the Tamaulipas State Police are in custody with Sijifredo Montemayor.

“I am waiting for proof that this happened,” said Salazar.

The sheriff said the Mexican state police were not eager to discuss the case with him on Thursday and that he will work to obtain more information from a commander on Friday. He said the BCSO has not verified whether Sijifredo Montemayor is actually in custody.

Salazar said officials believe Sijifredo Montemayor entered Mexico at about 5:30 pm on Wednesday, just hours after Sepúlveda was shot. The sheriff says family members may have helped Sijifredo escape across the border. However, it is not clear whether family members knew that the sergeant was shot.

BCSO went to the Montemayor brothers’ family home and asked them to come voluntarily. Some family members were arrested, but Salazar said it was not clear whether they would face any charges.

Authorities are still trying to find out if a family member who lived in the house helped Sijifredo Montemayor escape to Mexico.

The sheriff’s office has seized the vehicle used to take Sijifredo across the border and will look for more evidence in the case.

Salazar says he is not sure when Sijifredo will be brought from Mexico to the United States, as it is believed that he was also taken to the hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound. However, the sheriff said he did not know the severity of the suspect’s injury.

“It won’t be very easy,” said Salazar of Sijifredo Montemayor’s extradition to Bexar County.

Salazar said Wilfredo Montemayor is still on the run and is believed to still be in the San Antonio area.
