Susan Bayh: Former Indian first lady dead at 61

As the wife of former Indiana governor Evan Bayh, and the youngest first lady in the state in 150 years, she also served on former International Bill Clinton’s Joint Commission, working on issues with Canada.

Bayh was described by his family as “an incredible person who led a life full of love, courage and achievements”.

President Joe Biden remembered Bayh in a statement on Sunday, saying that she “stood out as a unique treasure – a model of kindness, generosity and grace”.

“Jill and I are deeply saddened to hear of the passing away of Susan Bayh, a dear civil servant and a warm and wonderful friend who has brought light to the lives of everyone who met her,” he said.

Biden added that Bayh, who was diagnosed with the same cancer as his son Beau, “fought his battle while she lived her life: bravely, with love and purpose.”

Bayh was an adjunct professor at her alma mater school of law, the University of Southern California, in addition to other positions she held at academic institutions.
