COLOMBIA – The South Carolina Supreme Court suspended the legal license of attorney and former head of state agency Harry Gregory after he was arrested on charges of practicing obscene acts against a child.
The former director of the SC State Accident Fund was arrested on March 18 by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and accused of committing acts from 2002 to 2004, when the victim was a minor, according to Sheriff Leon Lott.
Gregory, 61, was head of the agency that provides occupational accident insurance for SC government officials for 14 years, after being appointed in 2003 by then Gov. Mark Sanford.
Gregory was released on $ 100,000 bail on March 19, according to court records.
A personal bail bond means that the defendant is released from prison without being obliged to post any money, based on the promise to appear at the next trial.
Under state law, the Supreme Court can place a lawyer on provisional suspension if a lawyer is charged with a “serious crime”.
According to the order of the higher court, the suspension will remain in effect until further notice.
Gregory’s next hearing is May 7.
